The
Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council recently issued its white
paper, "Proper Airflow Critical To Healthcare
Laundries."
"Proper
airflow is a primary
consideration
for any healthcare laundry that seeks to perform at the highest level
possible for its clients," says Kathy Tinker, HLAC Executive
Director.
The white paper
discusses current indoor airflow standards, examines factors that can
disturb proper airflow, and provides resources that can help a
laundry effectively monitor and maintain an indoor climate that
supports excellence in healthcare textile processing. "HLAC's
efforts to promote proper airflow in healthcare laundry plants
heightens industry awareness of its importance and raises the bar for
laundry excellence," says Tinker.

HLAC
Introduces Laundry Checklist Tool for Infection Professionals at APIC
2010
HLAC
presented a well-attended 1-hour educational session at APIC's 27th
Annual Educational Conference and International Meeting held in New
Orleans, July 11-15. The presentation focused around educating
infection professionals about key healthcare laundry protocols, how
accredited laundries support infection prevention strategies, and
the importance of validating supply chain partners.
During the session, HLAC Executive Director, Kathy Tinker, introduced
a new checklist tool developed by HLAC that can assist
healthcare professionals responsible for touring and selecting a
laundry provider. The primary goal of the new tool is to help
healthcare professionals in understanding what questions to ask and
what to look for during a laundry visit.

Standard Part II, 1.5
Medical Waste
The
HLAC Standard states: "The provider must have a written plan
with the user detailing the procedures to follow when medical waste
is found among soiled healthcare textiles. The plan must be in
accordance with state medical waste regulations."
The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen standard (1910.1030) addresses exposure
hazards to regulated waste, especially at the point of generation,
initial containment, bagging and labeling. However when medical waste
is found in the textiles at the laundry, state regulations should be
consulted to best determine how to store, transport, treat or dispose
of them properly.
States vary in their definitions of what constitutes medical
waste. Companies who specialize in disposal can make
the task manageable. If you choose to learn more about what
is medical waste in your state, click on this resource: HERC State by State Regulated Medical Waste Resource
Locator. The link takes you to a map where you can click
on your state to learn more about applicable definitions and
regulations for medical waste.
