HLAC Accreditation Required for
State of Ohio Bids
Since July 2009, the state of Ohio has required laundry providers to either be accredited or seek accreditation within 12 months of being awarded a state bid for healthcare laundry services. "After Mr. Steve Schumacher, Operations Director, of the Mt. Vernon Developmental Center, brought HLAC to our attention, we decided to research HLAC to learn more about the inspection and accreditation process," says Peggy Canada, CPPB, Contract Analyst with the State of Ohio. Upon learning more, we decided that this was an important attribute for laundries serving the state, says Mr. Steve Morbitzer, CPPO, CPPB, Manager, State of Ohio.
"This is an important trend we expect will continue to grow nationwide," says Judy Reino, HLAC Chair. "We have seen other states and organizations designate accreditation as preferred for laundries seeking to win a bid or RFP," Reino says.
Ohio is currently served by six HLAC-accredited facilities. Visit www.hlacnet.org to view a list of the currently accredited locations.

HLAC Achieves 100% Renewal
in 2009
Accredited Laundries Value Credential
HLAC is pleased to announce that all laundries up for renewal in 2009 have either completed or are scheduled for their reinspection. Accreditation is valid for three years; after three years, the laundry must undergo a completely new, full inspection.
The process of preparing and achieving accreditation results in a strong culture of benchmarking, continuous process improvement, innovation, customer service excellence and hygienically clean textiles.
We applaud all those who seek HLAC accreditation and their commitment to serving healthcare customers and their patients.

Inspector's Corner
Standard 2.3.2, Part I - The Physical Environment \
A clean environment is a key element of a good healthcare laundry. Cleaning of the walls, floors, vents, working surfaces, and equipment can help reduce the risk that textiles will become recontaminated once they've been processed.
Be sure your cleaning schedule is well documented and that employees know where to view it. Surfaces that become visibly soiled should be cleaned at the next opportunity in addition to regularly scheduled cleaning. Where EPA-registered products are required, be sure employees read and understand the labels to ensure proper disinfection.
EPA-registered products should be effective against a variety of pathogens, but minimally should include Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella choleraesuis, HIV, HBV and HCV. | |
