The Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council

The Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council (HLAC) is a non-profit organization formed for the purpose of inspecting and accrediting laundries processing healthcare textiles for hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities. Becoming accredited is an entirely voluntary process. The Council does not have members, but is comprised of a 12-person Board of Directors who serve on a voluntary basis.

HLAC Mission: To accredit laundries processing healthcare textiles based on the highest standards for patient safety and infection prevention.

APIC Practice Guidelines Committee (PGC) Position Statement on Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) Testing of Reusable Textiles in Healthcare Facilities

APIC supports the following recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) HICPAC “Guidelines on Environmental Infection Control in Health-care Facilities, 2003:”

G. Laundry and Bedding

V. Microbiologic Sampling of Textiles
A. Do not conduct routine microbiological sampling of clean textiles. 1

AORN Recommends Accredited Laundries Process Surgical Attire

The Association for periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) released its “Recommended Practices for Surgical Attire” in November. Among the many concepts covered, AORN recommends that surgical attire be commercially laundered by an accredited laundry (Recommendation V). AORN recognizes the benefits that accredited laundries can provide such as following industry standards, routine monitoring of the wash process, regulatory awareness, employee training and more.
